Multi-generational travel drives cruise industry growth – CLIA report
The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) released its 2024 State of the Cruise Industry report, revealing a strong rebound from the pandemic and ambitious plans for growth.
Passenger volumes in 2023 exceeded pre-pandemic levels by seven per cent, reaching 31.7 million. This positive trend is expected to continue, with a projected 10% increase in cruise capacity by 2028. The report signifies a significant comeback for an industry heavily impacted by travel restrictions.
CLIA also identified a growing demographic of new cruisers. Nearly a third (27%) of cruisers in the past two years were new to the experience, reflecting a 12% year-over-year increase. Multi-generational travel is another rising trend. Over 30% of families are now cruising with at least two generations onboard, and nearly a third (28%) travel with three to five generations.
Sustainability remains a key focus, with cruise lines committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This aligns with the report’s finding of a surge in expedition cruises, which offer adventure-oriented itineraries in remote destinations. The number of passengers on these cruises has grown 71% since 2019.
Accessibility is another area of improvement. Nearly half of recent cruise passengers booked accessible shore excursions, indicating a commitment to inclusion.
The report further highlights the enduring influence of travel advisors. 73% of cruise travelers reported that their advisors significantly impacted their decision to book a cruise.
The CLIA report offers a clear message: the cruise industry has not only recovered from the pandemic but is positioned for significant expansion. With a focus on attracting new demographics, sustainability, and inclusivity, the future appears bright for those who enjoy exploring by sea.
